When we first bought our house, 17 1/2 years ago, we had a tiny garden: tomato plants, herbs, and grapes.
I've been wanting to get our garden doing again but other things seemed to get in the way. Thankfully, the Earth Day Celebration on April 23 gave us the kick in the pants we needed. The little one was given a tomato plant and a broccoli plant so Jeff picked up a cherry tomato plant, another tomato plant, and a pepper plant and our garden begun.
As life would have it, I don't have any early photos and once the broccoli plant started to flourish, the rabbits helped themselves to a tasty treat.
We didn't do anything fancy, no additions to the soil, tilling, or invest any time into preparing. We (or in this case, Jeff, since at the time I was knee-deep in finals) simply planted everything. The only thing we did was add a tiny amount (maybe 1/4 cup) of Biosolid fertilizer (given to us at Earth Day).
I sure wish they made this fertilizer available to the public because our tomato plants are out of control.
Here's what the garden looked like on July 31st.
We kept this very close to the house, just off the back deck. And as you can see we made watering very easy. Why walk down to the plants when you can just hang the hose over the rail of the balcony and let gravity do it?
The tomatoes have clearly taken over, as you can barely see the pepper plant. Look above the second block on the right.
This tomato plant is growing like gangbusters. We've started to thread it throw the balcony.
Fried Green Tomatoes anyone?
So far the cherry tomatoes have been the most prolific.
Despite being overshadowed and dwarfed, the pepper plant is hanging in there. We added this pepper to our salad the other day.
Nothing tastes better than fresh from the garden organic produce.
